Wikipedia: Potassium is an essential and for the function of all living cells is in human nutrition; Supplements of potassium in medicine are most widely used in conjunction with loop diuretics and thiazides. A potassium ion are necessary and is a key mechanism in nerve transmission, and potassium depletion in animals, including humans, results in various cardiac dysfunctions. Potassium accumulates in plant cells, and thus fresh fruits and vegetables are a good dietary source of it.

The 2004 guidelines of the Institute of Medicine specify a DRI of 4,000 mg of potassium though most Americans consume only half that amount per day, which would make them formally deficient as regards this particular recommendation.Potassium is the eighth or ninth most common element by mass in the human body, Potassium cations are important in neuron (brain and nerve) function. Shortage of potassium in body fluids may cause a potentially fatal condition known as hypokalemia, typically resulting from vomiting, diarrhea,

Observational epidemiologic studies have reported an inverse association between dietary potassium intake and blood pressure (Bp) Randomized clinical trials have documented that potassium supplementation reduced BP in both hypertensive and normotensive participants. BP levels were reduced in response to the potassium supplement for both men and women

Oral Potassium Supplement Use In Chronic Heart Failure
Hypokalemia is common in heart failure (HF) and is associated with increased mortality. Potassium supplements are commonly used to treat hypokalemia and maintain normokalemia.Yet, our findings suggest that hypokalemia-associated mortality was eliminated in those receiving potassium supplements In patients with hypertension, potassium-sparing diuretics. Findings from the current analysis suggest that in patients with chronic HF potassium supplements may eliminate hypokalemia-associated deaths.

PROTECTIVE EFFECT OF POTASSIUM

Data from animal experiments and epidemiologic studies suggest that high potassium may reduce the risk of stroke 1. In 1987, the results of a 12-year prospective population study showed that the relative risk of stroke-associated mortality was significantly lower with higher potassium intake. The authors also noted that the effect of potassium was greater than that which would have been predicted from its ability to lower blood pressure.
